P-3 Orion from the US Navy
31 August 2012
The United States Navy has confirmed participation with a P-3C Orion coming from Patrol Squadron 9 the Golden Eagles. VP-9 is based in Kaneohe Marine Corps Base Hawaii.
The Lockheed P-3 Orion is a four-engine turboprop anti-submarine and maritime surveillance aircraft developed for the United States Navy and introduced in the 1960s. The aircraft is easily recognizable by its distinctive tail stinger or "MAD Boom", used for the magnetic detection of submarines.
At this time a squadron detachment is based in NAS Sigonella in Sicily, for patrol in the Mediterranean and further afield.
The Malta Aviation Society is honoured to again have a Hawaiian-based P-3 Squadron participating at Malta’s Airshow.
