NATO AWACS is back

The NATO E-3A Component has accepted the invitation made by the Malta Aviation Society to participate again in this year's static display during the Malta International Airshow 2014

This sophisticated and strange-looking flying radar is very popular with the crowds as the crew kindly open the aircraft for visitors to the airshow to have a peek inside the aircraft. The E-3A Component has 17 E-3's Based in Geilenkirchen, Germany. The AWACS’s main role is to monitor and control NATO aircraft in peace and during operations all over the globe. The crews of the aircraft are all coming from different NATO members.

The Boeing E-3 Sentry is an airborne early warning and control aircraft (AWACS) developed by Boeing as the prime contractor. Derived from the Boeing 707, it provides all-weather surveillance,command, control and communications, and is used by the United States AirForce (USAF), NATO, Royal Air Force(RAF), French Air Force and Royal Saudi Air Force. The E-3 is distinguished by the distinctive rotating radar dome above the fuselage.
