Retro aircraft to mark 40th year
17 April 2014
Air Malta surprised the islands with a freshly painted Airbus painted in retro colours, specifically, the first-ever colour scheme as when the airline was launched in 1974. The flight kick-started its 40th anniversary celebrations.
Aircraft 9H-AEI flew in on a lovely spring afternoon using flight number KM40 after having been repainted in Ostrava ,the Czech Republic.
It performed two low flypasts on runway 31 and overflew the island before landing, around 6pm.
It flew over the Grand Harbour, Sliema, the northern coastline of Malta, Mosta, Qrendi and Birzebbuga before finally landing and welcomed by MIA’s fire-fighting vehicles who showered the aircraft before it taxied into its parking location.
A high number of members from the Malta Aviation Society were at vantage points around the airport area to get pictures of the newly painted aircraft.
The Malta Aviation Society is in talks with Air Malta to try and get the new retro livery aircraft during this year's edition of the Malta International Airshow, operations permitting.
The image above featured in today's Times of Malta shows the spotters photographing the newly painted A320 of the national airline.
