United States Navy is Back!!!
20 September 2014
The United States of America, long-time supporter of the Malta International Airshow, has confirmed participation of a P-3C Orion at this year’s event. The United States Navy P-3C Orion coming from Patrol Squadron 4 the Skinny Dragons, based in Kaneohe Bay Hawaii, is schedule to arrive next Friday and will join other Maritime Patrol Aircraft in the Static Park.
The Lockheed P-3 Orion is a four-engine turboprop anti-submarine and maritime surveillance aircraft developed for the United States Navy and introduced in the 1960s. The aircraft is easily recognizable by its distinctive tail stinger or "MAD Boom", used for the magnetic detection of submarines.
At this time a squadron detachment is based in NAS Sigonella in Sicily, for patrol in the Mediterranean and further afield.
The Malta Aviation Society is honoured to again have a Hawaiian-based P-3 Squadron participating at Malta’s Airshow.
